Great Drum Foundation has ceased operations. Sound Revelation! New York City, Come and join us in building a community of heartsound... Sundays from 4pm to 7pm at the Fourth Universalist Society - 160 Central Park West, a beautiful cathedral at 76th street 1 block from the Museum of Natural History. Reactions from the audience have been strongly positive and more and more great musicians are joining us. Here's a description of Sunday, March 7th that an audience member sent in: * * * * * * * * SOUND REVELATION NYC! - an intercontinental aggregation of master musicians playing instruments that date back thousands of years. Even more astonishing than the onstage assortment of traditions, each old enough to predate awareness of the other, is that the sound they emanate together is harmonious and pure. An African flute yells, chirps and sings over rolling drums. An overtone singer calls across continents and time. A master erhu-ist plays music from an era when Chinese folks didn't even know that Irishmen existed. These are strains of musical tradition so pure that they are more alike in their purity than they are distinct in their historical ignorance of each other. It shouldn't fit. But it does. Why shouldn't it? Maybe because we aren't accustomed to these levels of diversity and mastery happening at the same time. Like dips from cool springs the world over ladled into one clean crucible. When listening to these depths of harmony, calling it a revelation is no exaggeration. It is simply music so beautiful that it has lasted longer than religion. This music is alive and conjured every Sunday by Great Drum Foundation. Come by and hear SOUND REVELATION! for yourself. by Brian Shuman, a listener who came to listen and will again. * * * * * * * * Sunday, February 29th was the launch of SOUND REVELATION NYC! Here's a description of that first encounter: The master Chinese musician Baon Cao played erhu. From Guinea, Famoro Dioubate, a jeli from a famous family of griots brought his balafon. Timothy Hill, a longtime member of the Harmonic Choir produced an array of over and undertones. Bora Yasar from Turkey brought his saz, kopuz and tambour and drumset artist Franklin Kiermyer provided the roaring continuum for these heartfelt spiritual musical meetings. The audience expressed great joy in the experience and we are all set to do it again this Sunday. We've invited some fantastic musicians to join us again this time and we truly hope you'll be there too. * * * * * * * * WHAT? WHEN? WHY? WHERE? Subsequent months were devoted to the tasks of further developing and documenting our strategy and registering our non-profit status. By January 2003, the U.S. Internal Revenue Service had formally recognized our status as a 501c3 charitable organization and we could then start bringing people and resources together to actualize our goals. Since then we have: - Developed and launched this website. - Produced the two short promotional videos on our home page that present our vision and methods. - Produced the 4 short musical examples, also available on our home page, that give the flavor of our presentations. - Produced a promotional CD-R for membership/partnership/resource building. - Implemented an email campaign that succeeded in introducing GDF to more than 1500 businesses, organizations and individuals in our immediate constituency. - Followed through with these contacts yielding contributions of expertise, funds, and gifts in kind that have allowed us to continue to grow and arrive at this point. Our greatest achievement thus far is the establishment of this network we are building together with many others who hold the same aspiration for peace and freedom that we do. What we have learnt along the way is that we can build this network most efficiently by focusing our efforts in one geographic area for the time being. Presenting our initial programs in America will allow us to establish the working model that we will use elsewhere as our programs evolve on an international level. * * * * * * * * GDF Lapel Pin Hits the Streets...The incredibly sophisticated and dashing
